Does your strategy change at all when you're exploring a completely new (let's say, never been done before) feature or product?
I find it challenging to find any data on such ideas, and customers often cant articulate what they want in that sense. Where is the balance in that scenario?
Great question. In these situations, we tend to build minimum viable tests/products and deliver them to start collecting data and user insights.
We would be careful in not doing too much 'polish' work given the uncertainty but we shouldn't shy away from the opportunity.
In summary, if data doesn't exist and we believe it's something the user wants but isn't asking for then we should look to build something and get it out there to start collecting these insights. There is an inherent risk here as it relates to time and effort, but the outcome could be massive.
An exercise to go through in this situation is what must be true for your idea to be successful and seeking ways to validate those individual assumptions through smaller-scale experiments/prototypes
